![]() ![]() in the Era of Louis XIV at Versailles ~1664 During the reign of Louis XIV, the Maurys and the Fontaines had a monopoly in the wine and salt businesses. Located in the Bordeaux region of southern France, they became prosperous and influential. In 1664, at the young age of 21, Antoine de Crocketagne, known as the best equestrian in southern France, received a commission in the service of the mounted palace guards. Antoine subsequently became the personal guard of Louise de Saix, a lady of the court, a cousin of the king and a descendant of the Medici family. They married in 1669. Antoine resigned his commission.
