(1754 - 1769) Since preachers earned little money, the Reverend James Maury started a classical school. Besides the rigorous study of Latin and Greek, math and science, it's not surprising that an educator whose ancestors were Huguenot would have taught his students Huguenot values as well as John Locke's ideas of the worth of the individual and the consent of the governed. Maury's Students Included: George Washington and his brothers, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, 5 signers of the Declaration of Independence.
