UNIQUE MELDING OF INDIVIDUALS AND IDEALS
for the Future of the American Colonies
Immigrants to the colonies were attracted to the frontier areas for a variety of reasons.
Foremost among them was the desire for LAND OWNERSHIP. Individual settlers could be granted land.
This represented a freedom unknown to ordinary people in the old world and the primary incentive for settling the wilderness areas west of the mountains.
The men often became part of militias which could be called into service as needed.
