Samuel Crockett

During this time, the new world appealed to many people who dreamed of prosperity and a peaceful life.

Samuel Crockett, a grandson of Antoine and Louise Crockett, chose to emigrate from Bantry Bay, Ireland to the American colonies. Around 1715, at the age of 21, Samuel embarked on his journey to the American Colonies.

Meeting the Reverend John Thompson on the sailing ship "Grace", Samuel was enamored with his daughter Esther, who at the time, was only 5 years old. He resolved to marry her when she came of age.

Samuel was apprenticed to Swiss blacksmiths in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he learned the art and craft of making long rifles. He became the first generation of the Crockett rifle makers.

A unique innovation in long rifles of the day was "rifling", the spiral groves inside the barrel which made the balls spin, resulting in greater accuracy than the 'Brown Bess' muskets commonly used at the time.
