Edit of Nantes - 1598

Eventually, Henry of Navarre became King Henry IV of France. His Catholic father had died early in his life. His Huguenot mother influenced his sympathetic attitudes towards Huguenots. In 1598, he signed the Edit of Nantes which gave the Huguenots certain freedoms and rights denied to most people in the 1500s.
