Typical Revolutionary War Battlefield

TYPICAL BATTLEFIELD
OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR ERA

Opponents lined up on opposite sides of the battlefield. The front line troops would shoot their muskets without any particular expectation of hitting anyone. The next line would advance and shoot while those behind reloaded. And so on went the battle until the opponents were close enough to each other to engage in hand to hand combat, the objective of each side being to overpower the enemy using the bayonets.

Success eluded both the Loyalists and the Patriots.
